About Polygon Ecosystem Token

POL replaced MATIC as the native token of the Polygon ecosystem, expanding its role beyond the original Polygon PoS sidechain to serve as the shared staking and gas token across Polygon's whole family of chains, including its zkEVM rollups connected via the AggLayer. Existing MATIC holders were migrated to POL 1:1, and the token is designed so a single staked position can help secure multiple Polygon chains at once rather than just one. POL is the successor token to MATIC, introduced as part of a shift from a single sidechain to a set of connected chains sharing a validator set and a common bridging layer. The design intent is that one staked token can secure many chains rather than each needing its own validator economy. For anyone reading a long price chart, the token migration is the thing to know: history spans both the original network and the restructured one. On this map POL sits with Layer 2 tokens and tends to move with Ethereum-adjacent sentiment.

Quick answers
What happened to MATIC?

MATIC was migrated to POL as part of Polygon's restructuring into a set of connected chains. Price history therefore spans both tokens and both network designs.

What is POL used for?

It is staked to secure Polygon's chains, pays for network participation, and is used in governance. One staked position is intended to secure multiple chains.

Is Polygon a rollup or a sidechain?

It began as a sidechain with its own validators and has since added rollup-based chains. The current architecture includes both, connected through a shared bridging layer.

Why does the token migration matter when reading the chart?

Because a continuous line covers two different tokens and two network designs. Comparisons across the migration are not strictly like-for-like.
