TIA powers Celestia, a modular blockchain that focuses on just one job — ordering transactions and guaranteeing data is actually available — rather than also executing every smart contract itself. Other chains ("rollups") can plug into Celestia for data availability instead of building that layer from scratch, an approach meant to make launching a new, secure blockchain far simpler than the traditional all-in-one model. Celestia does not run applications at all. It provides data availability — a place for rollups to publish their transaction data so that anyone can verify it — and leaves execution to the chains built on top. That is the modular thesis in its purest form: separate consensus and data from execution, and let each layer specialise. Whether that captures durable value for the base token is the open question, and it is the argument to understand before reading anything into TIA's price. On this map it is grouped with Layer 1 chains by function, though it deliberately does not compete with them for applications.
What is data availability?
The guarantee that the data behind a transaction has actually been published, so anyone can reconstruct and check the state. Rollups need it to be verifiable without trusting their operator.
Does Celestia run smart contracts?
No. It provides consensus and data availability; execution happens on the rollups and chains built on top of it.
What is TIA used for?
It pays for publishing data to the network, is staked to secure consensus, and is used in governance.
What is the modular blockchain thesis?
The idea that consensus, data availability, execution and settlement should be handled by specialised layers rather than by one chain doing everything. Celestia is a bet on that separation.
Market cap decides how big a bubble is drawn, so rank is what places TIA on the map relative to the rest of its sector.
