APT is the gas and staking token of Aptos, a Layer-1 built by former Meta engineers who worked on the Diem (Libra) project before it was shut down. Aptos uses the Move programming language, originally designed for Diem, and a parallel transaction execution engine aimed at high throughput — carrying over some of that earlier project's technical foundations into a fully public, permissionless chain. Aptos uses the Move language, which was designed so that digital assets are first-class types the compiler can reason about — a deliberate response to the class of bugs that has drained value from contracts written in more permissive languages. Its execution engine processes transactions optimistically in parallel and re-runs only those that conflict. Commercially the project has pushed towards payments and institutional pilots rather than purely retail DeFi. On this map it sits close to Sui in both sector and size, so comparing the two directly is usually more informative than comparing either against the largest chains.
What is Move and why does it matter?
Move is a programming language in which assets are represented as types the compiler can check, making it harder to write code that accidentally duplicates or destroys a token. It is used by both Aptos and Sui.
What is parallel execution?
Transactions that do not touch the same data can be processed at the same time instead of one after another. Aptos executes optimistically and re-runs only the transactions that turn out to conflict.
What is APT used for?
It pays transaction fees, is staked by validators and delegators, and is used in on-chain governance.
Where does Aptos sit on the bubble map?
In the Layer 1 group, close in size to other recent smart-contract chains. The table above shows its rank against the chains nearest to it.
Market cap decides how big a bubble is drawn, so rank is what places APT on the map relative to the rest of its sector.
