About Filecoin

FIL powers Filecoin, a decentralized storage network where anyone with spare hard drive space can rent it out to people who need to store data, verified on-chain through cryptographic proofs that the data is actually still being held. It functions as an open marketplace for storage capacity — the same basic idea as cloud storage, but with many independent providers instead of one company. Filecoin turns storage into a market: providers pledge collateral and prove continuously, using cryptographic proofs, that they still hold the data they were paid to keep. If they stop proving, they lose the collateral. That proof mechanism is what distinguishes it from simply paying someone to promise storage, and it is also what makes the network computationally heavy. It has since added a contract layer so storage deals can be programmed. On this map FIL is the largest asset in the physical-infrastructure group, and its usage is measurable in stored capacity.

Quick answers
How does Filecoin verify that data is stored?

Providers must produce continuous cryptographic proofs that they still hold the data. Failing to prove costs them the collateral they pledged, which makes storage economically enforced rather than trusted.

What is the collateral for?

It is the penalty at risk. Providers stake FIL against their storage commitments, so failing to keep data has a direct financial cost.

Can contracts run on Filecoin?

Yes, a contract layer was added so storage deals and payments can be programmed rather than arranged manually.

How is usage measured?

In storage capacity committed and in active deals, which is a more concrete usage metric than most sectors on this map provide.
