About Curve DAO

CRV governs Curve Finance, a decentralized exchange built specifically for trading similar-value assets — stablecoins, or different wrapped versions of the same coin — with very low slippage using specialized bonding curves. Curve also issues its own stablecoin, crvUSD, and CRV holders can lock tokens as veCRV to vote on which liquidity pools receive the protocol's reward emissions, a design widely copied across DeFi as "vote-escrow" tokenomics. Curve solved a specific problem: trading between assets that should be worth the same — stablecoins, or ether and its staked forms — where a general-purpose pricing formula wastes capital across price ranges that will never be used. Its curve concentrates liquidity near parity, giving very low slippage. It also invented the vote-escrow model that much of DeFi later copied. CRV's emission and locking mechanics have historically driven a competition between protocols for voting power, which is a large part of what determines its price behaviour.

Quick answers
Why is Curve used for stablecoin swaps?

Its pricing formula concentrates liquidity near parity, which is where assets that should trade one-for-one actually trade, so slippage on large swaps is far lower than on a general-purpose pool.

What is veCRV?

CRV locked for a period, granting voting power over where emissions are directed and a share of protocol fees. Longer locks grant more power.

What were the Curve wars?

Competition between protocols to accumulate voting power in order to direct CRV emissions to their own pools, which drove significant demand for locked CRV.

What is impermanent loss like in a stablecoin pool?

Much smaller than in a volatile pair, because the assets are meant to hold the same value. It is not zero — a depeg turns it into a real loss.
