About Cosmos Hub

ATOM secures the Cosmos Hub, the flagship chain of the wider Cosmos network — a collection of independent, purpose-built blockchains ("zones") that connect and exchange assets through the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol (IBC) rather than all running on one shared virtual machine. Newer chains can borrow the Hub's validator security through Interchain Security instead of bootstrapping their own, and ATOM holders stake to secure the network and vote on governance. Cosmos took the opposite approach from Polkadot: instead of shared security, each chain is fully sovereign with its own validators, and they communicate through the IBC protocol — a standard for passing verified messages between chains that has become genuinely widely used. The trade-off is explicit: full sovereignty, but each chain must bootstrap its own security. ATOM's role in this has been debated for years, because the standard's success does not automatically create demand for the token of the chain that authored it. That is a real and unresolved question worth knowing.

Quick answers
What is IBC?

A protocol for passing verified messages between independent blockchains without a trusted bridge in the middle. It is one of the more widely adopted interoperability standards.

How does Cosmos differ from Polkadot?

Cosmos chains are fully sovereign with their own validators; Polkadot parachains share the relay chain's security. Sovereignty versus shared security is the core trade-off.

What is the debate about ATOM?

IBC's adoption does not automatically create demand for the token of the hub that authored it. How ATOM captures value from the ecosystem's growth has been an open question for years.

What is ATOM used for?

Staking to secure the Cosmos Hub, governance, and fees on that chain.
